Three Ways a Cash-Secured Put Can End

Every cash-secured put you sell ends one of three ways. Most traders only imagine the first one. Knowing all three before you click is what changes your relationship with the trade.

Outcome 1: Expiration Worthless

The stock stays above your strike price at expiration. The put expires with no value. You keep the premium you collected on day one.

This is the outcome that draws most people to the strategy. The credit lands in your account the day you open the trade, and if expiration confirms your thesis, you keep it in full.

Outcome 2: Assignment

The stock closes below your strike at expiration. You are assigned the shares at the strike price you chose.

This is not a failure. It is the agreement you made. You reserved the cash. You chose the strike. The market accepted the other side of that deal. Now you own shares of a company you were willing to own at a price you set.

Your cost basis is your strike minus the credit you received. That number was visible on day one.

Outcome 3: Early Management

The position reaches your profit target before expiration. You close it early, collect most of the credit, and free the collateral for the next trade.

Many experienced wheel traders manage positions at 50 percent of max profit. That means closing when the put has lost half its value. The reasoning is straightforward: getting out early and recycling collateral tends to produce better outcomes over time than waiting for every last dollar of decay.

This outcome is entirely at your discretion. The simplest way to act on it is setting your closing order the day you open the trade.

The Agreement You Make on Day One

All three of these outcomes exist the moment you sell the put. The trade is not a prediction. It is a conditional agreement with defined terms on both sides.

Before you click, you know the credit, the breakeven, the strike, the expiration, and the collateral required. You know what assignment means and whether you are prepared to hold those shares. You know your profit target and when you would take it.

That is not complicated. It is preparation.
